HOME AFFAIRS be pleased to state:-




(a) the present status of updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the country, State-wise;

(b) the reasons for failure of certain States to complete the updation process;

(c) whether the Government has prepared any time bound schedule to complete the overall NRC updation in the country; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?


ANSWER


MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS (SHRI KIREN RIJIJU)

(a) to (d): The Government has decided to create the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC) based on the information collected under the scheme of National Population Register (NPR) by verifying the citizenship status of all individuals in the country. The proposals for sanction of expenditure are under formulation.

In the state of Assam, the citizenship will be determined on the basis of updation of National register of Citizens, 1951 (NRC). Based on the modalities submitted by the Government of Assam, the scheme has been approved by Government of India at an estimated cost of Rs. 288.18 crore which will be completed in three years. The Gazette notification in this regard has been issued.
