Detention Centres in Assam

Will the Minister of



HOME AFFAIRS be pleased to state:-


(a) the total number of detention centres in Assam including new detention centres which are yet to be constructed and made operational;

(b) the total capacity for each of these detention centres;

(c) the number of people died in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) detention camps/centres in North-Eastern States specially in Assam during the last one year;

(d) whether National Human Rights Commission has visited these camps in the last one year to monitor the living condition of the detainees;

(e) if so, the details thereof; and

(f) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (f): There are 06 (six) Detention Centres in Assam having capacity of 3,331 persons with the following details:

A Detention Centre at Matia, Goalpara with a capacity of 3000 is under construction.

There is no National Register of Citizens (NRC) detention camp/center is State of Assam. 10 inmates of the 06 Detention Centers in Assam, where declared foreigners/convicted foreigners are kept, died in different hospital from 1st March, 2019 to 29th February, 2020.

During last one year, from 1st March, 2019 to 29th February, 2020, three teams of National Human Right Commission (NHRC) have visited Detention Centers in Assam and have interacted with declared foreign nationals.
