Printing of Rs 2000 Currency Notes

FINANCE be pleased to state:-


(a) whether the Government is aware of the fact the circulation of Rs 2000 currency notes among the people is very low and even it is not available in the banks and ATMs;

(b) if so, the reaction of the Government in this regard;

(c) whether the Government has stopped printing of the denomination of Rs. 2000 currency notes; and

(d) if so, the details thereof along with reasons therefor ?


ANSWER
MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE (SHRI ANURAG SINGH THAKUR )

(a) & (b): As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as against 3,362 mpcs of ?2000 denomination banknotes in circulation on March 30, 2018 constituting 3.27% & 37.26% of NIC in terms of volume and value, respectively; 2499 mpcs were in circulation on February 26, 2021 constituting 2.01% and 17.78% of NIC in terms of volume and value, respectively.

(c) & (d): Printing of banknotes of particular denomination is decided by the Government in consultation with RBI to maintain desired denomination mix for facilitating transactional demand of public. During the years 2019-20 and 2020-21, no indent has been placed with the presses for printing of ?2000 denomination bank notes.
