DEFENCE be pleased to state:-


(a) the number of vacant posts in Navy along with the details thereof;

(b) the efforts made by the Government to increase the power and capacity of Navy during the last five years along with the details thereof; and

(c) whether the Government has made efforts to strengthen maritime security in the Indian ocean region and has signed pact with various countries in this regard; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) The details of vacant posts in Indian Navy as on 31 Jan 2021 are as under:-

(b) Enhancing the combat capability/ modernisation of Indian Navy is an ongoing process and is undertaken in accordance with Long Term Integrated Perspective Plan (LTIPP).

(c) & (d): Yes, Sir. The Indian Navy maintains regular presence and surveillance in India’s maritime ‘Areas of Interest’. Indian Navy Operation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) are aimed at sustained surveillance for enhanced Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), to show presence, address military challenges and tackle contingencies such as anti- Piracy, Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) and Search and Rescue (SAR).

To strengthen Maritime Security in the IOR, the Government has undertaken foreign cooperation initiatives with friendly foreign Navies through vast array of cooperative measures including capacity building, capability enhancement, constructive engagements and collaborative efforts etc. The details of pacts signed by the Indian Navy, to enhance maritime security in the IOR are as follows:-
(i) Hydrography - 7
(ii) White Shipping Agreement – 22
(iii) Reciprocal Logistics Agreement – 6

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has also signed bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)/ Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with Coast Guard of eight countries towards establishment of collaborative relation to combat transnational illegal activities at sea and develop regional cooperation.
