ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND
FAMILY WELFARE
(DR. BHARATI PRAVIN PAWAR)
(a): An Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI) surveillance system is functional in the country which has been strengthened to ensure adequate reporting of all AEFIs (minor, severe and serious) and investigation and causality assessment of all serious and severe AEFI cases including deaths to find any linkages with COVID-19 vaccine.

(b): Till 19th July’21, causality assessment for 179 serious and severe AEFI cases has been approved by the National AEFI Committee of which only one death case was found to be associated with COVID 19 vaccine. This was a case of anaphylaxis which can occur with any medicinal product including vaccines and can be fatal.

(c): There is a National AEFI Committee at National level and State AEFI Committee at State level to conduct the causality assessment. In addition, at national level, a special group medical experts have been constituted to conduct causality assessments and rapid reviews of reported AEFI cases following use of COVID 19 vaccine.

(d): Causality assessment has been done for 179 cases and is under process in about 150 cases. In addition, 498 cases have been studied for rapid review and analysis.
