RAILWAYS be pleased to state:-


(a) whether the Government is considering use of solar energy to reduce carbon emissions in the Railways;

(b) if so, the steps being taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) Yes, Sir. Indian Railways (IR) has planned to utilise solar energy for reducing Carbon emission in the Railways.

(b) Following steps have been taken for proliferation of Solar energy in Railways:
Indian Railways has installed solar plants on rooftop of stations and service buildings and also on unused vacant Railway land. As on 31.10.2021, a total of 128.17 MW Solar capacity has been installed in Indian Railways which includes 121.47 MW on rooftop of buildings and 6.7 MW on Railway land.
Further, IR has planned progressively to procure solar energy to reduce carbon emissions.
