(a) whether it is a fact that there has been nearly 30% reduction in fish species in the Ganga river during the period from 2016 to 2020;
(b) if so, the details thereof along with the reasons for such significant reduction;
(c) whether the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Kolkata has conducted any study on the issue and taken any steps to improve the fish species;
(d) if so, the details thereof and the time by which the said species are likely to be improved; and
(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (e): The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), has intimated that there is no such report regarding 30% reduction in fish biodiversity in the main channel of Ganga river. Further, the studies of ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Kolkata have reported 175 fish species from the main channel during 2017 and 190 fish species during 2020. It is further reported that ICAR-CIFRI has undertaken a detailed study on the fish and fisheries of river Ganga and socio-economic status of the fisherfolks of 75 villages adjacent to river Ganga. During 2017-20021, ICAR-CIFRI has undertaken 66 river ranching programs in 5 states namely Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal by releasing 42 lakhs indian major carps (catla, rohu and mrigal) and Calbasu fingerlings besides 50,000 fingerlings of Mahaseer, Prawn, Singhi, Bata for conservation of fish species in Ganga river under the project supported by National Mission for Clean Ganga.
