PESTICIDES RESIDUES IN COLD SOFT DRINKS

HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:-




(a) whether certain cold/soft drinks contain pesticide residues which are harmful for human beings

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government proposes to introduce any scientific norms in this regard;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the time by which such norms are likely to be introduced?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 67 FOR 8TH JULY, 2009

Carbonated water i.e. cold/soft drinks contain some pesticide residue as per the details of the findings of the National Level Experts Group (NLEG) on pesticide residues (2007).Based on the recommendations of NLEG and after consultation with the Central Committee for Food Standards, the Maximum Residue Limits for pesticide prescribed under Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules, 1955, for carbonated water i.e. cold/soft drinks have been prescribed at the level of not more than 0.001 ppm individually, vide GSR 427 (E) dated 17.06.2009.
